Successful search for subject near J.B. Bridge

Multiple police, fire and emergency agencies searched for a male subject in the wooded area along the Mississippi River in the vicinity of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge off I-255 in Columbia starting just before 9 p.m. Sunday. Shortly before 11 p.m., the subject was located in the area of Levee Road and BB Road and was detained by Illinois State Police.

Columbia police and fire department personnel joined ISP, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and Dupo police in the search. The Columbia Fire Department aerial drone was used in addition to off-road utility vehicles, a police canine and other resources.

A Columbia police officer initially responded to the report of a male subject standing at the side of the bridge who appeared despondent. Upon the officer’s arrival, the man ran away from police and was last seen running north off I-255 into the woods, prompting the search.

A Columbia fireman’s personal truck was rear-ended in a minor fender bender on the interstate during the search, with no injuries reported.
