Waterloo Walmart sold pre-cut melons linked to salmonella
The Waterloo Walmart is on the list of stores that sold pre-cut melons from a company in Indianapolis that has recalled the products due to a salmonella outbreak.
Federal, state, and local health officials are investigating the outbreak, which has sickened 60 people in five U.S. states. The fruit salad mixes included pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and cut fruit medley products from the Caito Foods facility in Indianapolis.
Of the 60 patients who became ill between April 30 and May 30, 31 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Illnesses have been reported in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.
The FDA said consumers should not eat the recalled products, which were distributed in nine states. The products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and distributed to several major retailers, including Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Pay Less, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging customers to check the sourcing of their melons and advises that if you can’t remember where you purchased your pre-cut melon, throw it away.
On Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported one case of salmonella that matches a multi-state outbreak strain with Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal identified as the likely source. The CDC is reporting 73 cases of salmonella from 31 states.
Kellogg Company announced it is voluntarily recalling 15.3-ounce and 23-ounce packages of Honey Smacks cereal. CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continue to investigate this multi-state outbreak.
