Charges filed following fight outside tavern

A 22-year-old man has been charged with multiple felonies and an arrest warrant has been issued for another man in connection with an Aug. 10 altercation that occurred outside of a Waterloo tavern.

Aaron Brigance, 22, of Waterloo, was charged Friday with felony aggravated battery and felony mob action following a review of the case conducted by Monroe County State’s Attorney Chris Hitzemann.

The incident occurred about 9:15 p.m. Aug. 10 outside of Fourth Street Bar, 301 S. Moore Street. Court information alleges that Brigance made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature and knowingly disturbed the public peace by striking and kicking Dangelo Miller and throwing him to the ground. Another man involved in the fight is facing similar charges but has not yet been arrested.

Waterloo police investigated the incident, which resulted in one person being transported to an area hospital. Police said a pocketknife was used by Miller to defend himself during the attack.

“The investigation also suggests additional individuals took part in the alleged battery of the victim that were not identified,” Hitzemann told the Republic-Times. “Anyone with information is asked to contact the Waterloo Police Department.”

Hitzemann added that based on evidence collected during the investigation, probable cause does not exist to support a charge against Miller “due to the application of the affirmative defense of self-defense.”
