Emergency personnel from Waterloo, Columbia and Monroe County assisted Illinois State Police in responding early Wednesday evening to a two-car crash with injuries at Route 3 and Hanover Road.

Survival Flight medical helicopter was initially requested but declined to fly due to severe weather in the area.

Illinois State Police said a blue Toyota Solara driven by James Dreyer of Columbia was traveling east on Hanover Road and attempted to turn left onto Route 3 when it was struck by a blue Ford Escape driven by Matthew Wilgren of St. Louis, which was traveling north on Route 3. The force of the impact caused Wilgren’s vehicle to rollover off to the right of the northbound lane.

Two children in Wilgren’s vehicle, ages 6 and 10, were transported by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis County for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening. The 6-year-old, who had been buckled in his seat, was ejected in the crash. He is in stable condition.

Dreyer was cited for failure to yield and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
