The Republic-Times Athlete of the Week is Waterloo High School sophomore cross country runner Jenna Schwartz.

She placed first overall in the Edwardsville Invitational on Saturday with a time of 19:28.09 for the 5K girls race. Earlier this month, Schwartz won the Granite City Invitational with a three-mile time of 18:10.13, leading the WHS girls to a fourth place finish out of 26 teams.

On Sept. 10, Schwartz placed third in the “First to the Finish” race at Detweiller Park in Peoria with a time of 18:32.7.

Last season, Schwartz medaled at the state cross country meet with a time of 17:55.
