School enrollment numbers up from last year

The 2016-17 school year shows an upward trend in student enrollment at both public and private schools in the area.

Waterloo
For the Waterloo school district, enrollment totalled 2,694 on Aug. 16. That comes out to 20 more students than last year.

Zahnow Elementary’s enrollment of kindergarten and first grade students is 408.

For Rogers Elementary, 406 third and fourth graders enrolled in the school.

Fourth and fifth graders at Gardner Elementary account for 386 students in the district.

Waterloo Junior High School students, sixth through eighth grades, enrolled 590 students.

Nine hundred and four students are enrolled at Waterloo High School.

Mitchell North came aboard as the new athletic director and WHS dean of students.

Columbia
As of the Aug. 18 school board meeting, Columbia school district showed a total enrollment of 1,969 students. The previous year’s enrollment totaled 1,977, a difference of eight students.

“The numbers are ‘soft’ as there were students still enrolling/dropping at the time of the meeting,” said Jana Eytchison, Columbia school district administrative assistant.

Twenty five students are enrolled in the pre-K program this year, compared to 24 last year.

Eagleview Elementary’s kindergarten through first grade enrollment went from 268 last year to 272 for the current year.

Second through fourth grade enrollment at Parkview Elementary dropped by 12 students, with last year’s at 421 compared to 409 this year.

Columbia Middle School’s enrollment includes fifth through eighth grades. Total enrollment came out to 588 for the year, compared to last year’s 596.

Columbia High School’s enrollment figures are 673 for the year. Last year, the number came out to 665, a total of eight fewer students. CHS welcomed new principal Kevin Moore at the beginning of the school year.
