The Mon-Clair League baseball season is in full swing, with the Waterloo Millers and Millstadt VFW Green Machine picking up where they left off.

The two teams met in the postseason tournament finals last season, with Millstadt emerging victorious.

Both squads sit atop the Monroe Division standings at 6-2 heading into a head-to-head matchup Sunday afternoon in Millstadt.

On Sunday, Waterloo split a doubleheader with Belleville, winning 7-1 in the first game and dropping game two, 4-0.

Ken Wilson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Millers in the game one win. Ethan Ruff and Craig Ohlau scored two runs each as starting pitcher Andy Galle went six strong innings for the victory.

Wilson currently leads the Millers in hitting at .444.

In game two, Ethan Ruff had a single and triple and Jason Harrison added two singles for the Millers. Austin Nunnery pitched a complete game with six strikeouts.

“We let two games get away from us so far,” Millers manager Vern Moehrs said. “We have a little younger team this year. Our pitching’s been really good. Our offense has struggled a bit, but we’ll come around.”

Moehrs added that graduating WHS seniors Noah Thaggard and Tyler McAlister plan to join his squad this summer, along with Freeburg’s Keegan Baxmeyer.

Millstadt swept a doubleheader with Columbia on Sunday, winning 10-2 and 4-1.

Rob Beatty and Cal Kossina had three hits each in the game one win, with Sam Lidisky picking up the pitching win.

Mitch Matecki and Tony Kossina had two hits each in game two with Brandon Saak earning the victory on the mound.

Zack Skaer currently leads Millstadt hitters with a .455 average.

In other Mon-Clair action, Valmeyer (1-7) and Columbia (2-4) will do battle this Sunday at Kleinschmidt Field in rural Columbia. The first game starts at 1:30 p.m.
