The Valmeyer Fire Department responded along with police and EMS personnel to a fire reported at 113 E. Woodland Ridge about 10:35 a.m. Thursday.

A neighbor called in the fire upon observing smoke coming from the back of the home, which belongs to Rob and Lori Vance. The Vances weren’t home at the time of the incident, but the children who were home safely evacuated without injury.

Firemen remained on scene for more than an hour.

The fire was caused by a barbecue grill that was leaning against the house. The fire spread to the exterior panels of the home, burning off siding and damaging the patio. Firefighters prevented any damage from taking place inside the home, Valmeyer Fire Chief Floyd Floarke said.

“We want to thank our neighbors, family, the Valmeyer Police Chief and Valmeyer Fire Department for saving our sons and our home,” Lori Vance said. “We are very grateful for all they did for us.”
