Stewart ends record-setting season at state
Waterloo High School senior wrestler Austin Stewart made history at the state tournament in the 152-pound weight class on Friday.
Needing one win to surpass his brother’s school record for most wins in a season, Stewart defeated Joey Davies of Tinley Park for his 38th victory of the season at State Farm Center in Champaign.
Stewart lost his next two matches, ending his season. He lost matches to Kyle Goin of Washington and Jake Fiorito of Woodstock.
However, his 38 wins this season tops the previous school single-season record of 37 wins set by Austin’s older brother, Paul Stewart, who now wrestles at Millikin. With 102 career wins, Austin ranks second behind only his older brother.
Austin finished with a record of 38-12. His father, WHS head wrestling coach Pat Stewart, said all of his losses came to wrestlers who advanced to state except for one.
“He’s a tough kid,” Pat Stewart said of his son. “He got some good mat time up at state and put himself in a good position to win.”
A win in his second state match would have put him in line for a state medal, but he lost in a close one.
“He didn’t wrestle his match, in my opinion,” coach Stewart said. “The kid took him down.”
Austin is exploring his options and may decided to wrestle collegiately at NCAA Division II Lindenwood University-St. Charles or elsewhere.
There’s even a chance he might join his older brother at Millikin.
“That sure would be something,” Pat Stewart said of the possibility of having both sons wrestling at the same college. “We’ll just have to see.”
