The Columbia and Gibault basketball teams are aiming high this postseason as regional action gets set for liftoff.

The Eagles already added to their trophy case on Friday night following some early season tournament wins. With a 50-37 victory at Freeburg, Columbia clinched a share of the Cahokia Conference title with Breese Central.

Korbin Farmer led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the win.

The Eagles (19-6) will close out the regular season at home against Triad on Friday night, honoring senior team members Farmer, Adam Becker, Ryan Gudeman, Jonathan Holmes, Drew Huebner and Cameron Roth in the process.

The Eagles will then host a Class 3A regional next week, taking on the winner of Waterloo vs. Freeburg on Tuesday, March 1. Other teams in the regional are Mater Dei and Cahokia. The regional final will be played Friday night, March 4.

Gibault ended its regular season in fine form last week, posting convincing home wins over Alton Marquette and Lovejoy.

Last Tuesday, the Hawks (20-9) saluted their seniors ahead of a 64-38 win over Marquette. Gibault shot 53 percent from the floor and led 33-15 at halftime. As a team, they went 9-for-18 from three-point land, including three three-pointers each from Garrett and Jacob Rueter.

Brian Deterding led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds. Trevor Davis added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

It was pretty much the same result on Friday night against Lovejoy, as the Hawks won 84-47. The team shot nearly 50 percent from the floor again and its big three of Deterding, Davis and Jacob Rueter shined in front of the home crowd.

Deterding scored 23 points with 13 rebounds; Davis scored 18 points with 13 rebounds; Jacob Rueter scored 18 points with 11 assists.

Gibault will play Bunker Hill in the Class 1A Bunker Hill Regional on Wednesday night, with a possible regional final showdown with Metro East Lutheran waiting in the wings this Friday.

Metro East Lutheran has defeated Gibault twice this season in close contests.

In other local hoops action, Valmeyer ended its season with a 54-32 loss to Marissa in the Class 1A Lebanon Regional on Monday night.

Michael Chism scored 13 points and Vaughn Larsen added 11 for the Pirates, who finished with a record of 6-22.

The Pirates had just topped Marissa in a regular season tilt on Friday night, 55-53. Chism poured in 19 points with nine rebounds and four blocks. Larsen added 13 points and nine assists.

In the Class 2A Dupo Regional, the host Tigers advanced with an 89-75 win over Wood River on Monday.

Austin Francis exploded for 29 points, including 12-for-12 shooting from the free throw line. Michael Overbay added 16 points and Cody Richardson scored 15 for the Tigers, who played Marquette on Tuesday night for a berth in the final.

Waterloo (6-20) dropped its 10th straight contest in a 69-49 loss at home to Mascoutah on Friday. Ben Huels led the ‘Dogs with 16 points, followed by Ross Schrader with 14 and Dylan Hunt with 13 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season with conference games at home against Jerseyville on Tuesday (result not known at press time) and at Civic Memorial on Friday before taking on Freeburg in the Class 3A Columbia Regional on Monday night.
