‘Books and Bagels’ club a hit at WJHS
It’s hard to turn down free breakfast. That’s the thought Waterloo Junior High School teachers Andy Mayer and Melissa Meyers had when they started the reading club “Books and Bagels” three years ago.
“I think it was kind of a collaborative effort between Melissa and I,” Mayer said. “Melissa is a seventh grade teacher, I teach eighth grade. We just kind of wanted something more to promote reading. We’ve got all kinds of sports and different clubs, but there was this group of students who weren’t getting involved. So, we thought we’d start this club and offer food. Junior high kids love food.”
The club focuses much more on the books aspect of its name. Sometimes, students don’t even eat bagels.
“Everyone prefers Ahne’s donuts, I think,” Meyers said.
Anyway, the club meets the second Tuesday of the month from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. to discuss a certain book…>>>
