Pence enters guilty plea

Garrett Lee Pence

Garrett Lee Pence, 36, of Granite City, entered a negotiated plea of guilty last Wednesday in Monroe County Circuit Court to a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery in connection with an August 2013 incident in Waterloo that resulted in injuries to his young son.

Pence had originally been charged with felony aggravated battery in the case, but the charge was reduced as part of plea negotiations.

He was sentenced to two years of conditional discharge and fined $1,310. In addition, the court ordered that Pence will have no visitation with his son except as allowed through the Department of Children and Family Services. He must also register as a violent offender against youth and must perform 100 hours of public service as special conditions involved with his sentence.

Court information states that inside what was then the Pence family home at 1123 Cottonwood Lane in Waterloo on Aug. 29, 2013, Pence “applied excessive pressure to multiple points on Kash Pence’s body, causing bruising on the arm, back, face and buttocks, and inflicted abusive head trauma, including subdural hemorrhaging and extensive retinal hemorrhaging through excessive acceleration and deceleration of Kash’s body.”
