Eagles edge Central; ‘Dogs lose heartbreaker

There are now only two weeks left in the high school football season.

Columbia was able to hang on and beat conference foe Breese Central, 28-27.

On the Eagles’ first drive of the game, Kenny Fields scored on a 24-yard run to take a 7-0 lead. After Central scored to tie the game, Columbia answered with a 4-yard passing TD from Drew Huebner to Jordan Holmes.

Again, Central scored, but they missed the extra-point and trailed 14-13. Columbia extended the lead before the half on another 4-yard TD, this time from Huebner to Cole Napier. Columbia led Central 21-13 at the half.

Central scored late in the third quarter, but missed on the two-point conversion. Columbia led 21-19. The Eagles got some breathing room on a 15-yard passing TD from Huebner to Jordan Holmes. Central scored again, but Columbia held on for the 28-27 win.

For Waterloo, their playoff chances ended in a tightly-fought loss to Civic Memorial for the Bulldogs homecoming game. They fell 31-28.

Max Jennings was busy in the first half for the ‘Dogs, scoring both TDs. The teams were tied 14-14 at halftime.

Waterloo was trailing 31-20 in the fourth quarter when quarterback Aaron Laskowski tossed a 65-yard TD pass to Cole Milam. They missed the two-point conversion and were down 31-26.

The ‘Dogs defense forced a fumble, but on the ensuing drive, an interception in the endzone gave the ball back to Civic Memorial. The defense came up big again for a safety, but the offense couldn’t score again and lost 31-28.

In other action, Dupo lost at home to Carlyle, 42-20.
