Disc golf course grand opening July 4 in Waterloo
The Waterloo Park District is planning a July 4 grand opening of its new disc golf course at Konarcik Park.
The grand opening will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, Waterloo Park District President Joann Harlin said.
The new course, consisting of 18 “holes,” is self-maintained and will be open from dawn to dusk. All leagues, tournaments and special events on this new course will require prior approval from the park district board.
“The park district encourages all park patrons to view the park district website at www.waterlooparkdistrict.org and become familiar with park district ordinances and rules to keep all our parks beautiful,” Harlin issued in a press release.
Pavilion rental is also required in advance at all district parks.
Disc golf, also known as frisbee golf or “frolf,” is a sport of precision and accuracy and consists of a flying disc being thrown at a target.
As of late 2011, there were more than 4,000 permanent disc golf courses installed in North America, Europe and Asia. That number is increasing yearly.
In this case, metal baskets have been installed in the park throughout a golf-like course for the public to use.
Park district officials were put in touch with Dave McCormack, owner of Gateway Disc Sports in Maryland Heights, Mo., who installs courses in the area.
He has more than 20 years of experience in disc golf design and installation and has played more than 426 disc golf courses in North America, Europe and Japan.
