There was plenty of action on the diamond this weekend, including two high school baseball rivalry games.

On Friday night, Columbia won its fifth straight game behind continued strong pitching in a 7-1 victory over cross-county rival Gibault at GCS Ballpark in Sauget.

Brendan Wilhelm and Jacob Hill combined for a one-hitter on the mound for the Eagles (7-2) in the win.

Cameron Touchette continued his hot spring at the plate for Columbia, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Lamont Read was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Also on Friday, senior lefty starting pitcher Corey Vogel got 13 groundball outs in a complete game victory for Waterloo at Belleville West, 6-2.

Three Bulldogs hitters collected two hits apiece in the win: Kane Osterhage (2-for-4, 2 RBIs), Erik Kaiser (2-for-3, RBI) and Ty Shylanski (2-for-3).

Valmeyer pulled out a 5-3 conference win at home Friday against Lebanon behind a dominant performance from pitcher Hunter Brewer. He fanned 14 Lebanon batters in the complete game victory.

Easton Wallace was the offensive star of the game, going 3-for-3 with a triple and two stolen bases for the Pirates.

On Saturday, Valmeyer (6-7) split a doubleheader at home against Althoff, falling 6-2 in the first game but bouncing back in game two for an 8-7 win.

The Pirates committed four errors in the game one loss. Jake Krekel went 3-for-3 at the plate with three stolen bases.

In game two, Krekel collected two more hits and Hunter Brewer added a 2-for-3 showing with two doubles in the win. Althoff scored four in the seventh to make it a nailbiter. Drew Maus had a big two-out, two-RBI pinch-hit single for the Pirates.

Waterloo High School was the site of three baseball games on Saturday, as Waterloo, Gibault and CBC participated in a triangular showdown.

The Bulldogs and Hawks  squared off for a “Battle of Waterloo” in game one, with the ‘Dogs prevailing 10-0 in five innings. Ben Maurer picked up the shutout victory for Waterloo.

The big inning was the bottom of the fourth. Already up 2-0 thanks to a Cole Milan home run, the ‘Dogs plated five runs to put the game out of reach. Ryan Aycock drew a bases loaded walk, scoring one. A towering flyball off the bat of Tyler McAlister was dropped in rightfield, allowing another run to score. Aaron Laskowski singled to left, scoring two more. An Erik Kaiser sacrifice fly made it a 7-0 lead.

Waterloo scored two more in the fifth to end the game.

Gibault (8-7) bounced back from two rivalry losses to defeat CBC in game two at WHS, 4-3. Alec Skaer had the game-winning RBI and super sophomore Trevor Davis went the distance on the mound for Gibault’s first baseball win over CBC in several years.

Skaer went 3-for-3 in the game with three RBIs.

CBC came out swinging in the final game at WHS, taking down the host Bulldogs, 12-2. Waterloo is now 7-4 on the season.
