The results are in, and a mighty Republican wave swept through Monroe County — and much of the state — on Tuesday night.

With all election totals in, Republican Neal Rohlfing won the race for Monroe County Sheriff against Democrat Dennis Schreder and Independent Kevin Hirsch by a wide margin, 60.9 percent for Rohlfing to 30.5 percent for Schreder and 8.5 percent for Hirsch. The vote total was 7,669 for Rohlfing to 3,849 for Schreder and 1,074 for Hirsch.

In the race for Monroe County Assessor, Carl Wuertz successfully won re-election, defeating Democrat Barrie Scott with a 62.7 to 37.2 percent vote.

The closest local race of the night was that for Monroe County Commissioner. Republican political newcomer Bob Elmore defeated incumbent Democrat Mike Kovarik by the slimmest of margins — 6,266 votes to 6,108 (50.6 to 49.36 percent).

In the race for U.S. Congressman in the 12th Illinois District, Republican Mike Bost defeated incumbent Democrat Bill Enyart by a 55 to 39 percent margin. Enyart conceded the victory to Bost late Tuesday night.

Republican Bruce Rauner also unseated Democrat Illinois Governor Pat Quinn on Tuesday night.
