‘Dogs tripped up at home by Jerseyville, 23-21

The Waterloo Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to Mississippi Valley Conference foe Jerseyville on Friday night before a packed house at WHS field on homecoming night.
After falling behind 14-0 early, the ‘Dogs battled back to take the lead late. But a costly interception in the final two minutes led to a game-winning field goal by Jerseyville, sending Waterloo to its first defeat of the season, 23-21.
Jerseyville (3-3) took advantage of two Waterloo turnovers in the first quarter, converting both into scores to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
Waterloo (5-1) had some good scoring chances in the second quarter, but Jerseyville’s defense was able to keep the Bulldogs out of the endzone to take the two touchdown lead into the locker room at the half. Waterloo’s final drive of the first half stalled at the 1-yard line.
Waterloo came out strong in the third quarter, tying the game at 14-14 on touchdowns by Rick Wiegand and Max Jennings. Jerseyville took the lead right back with 8:17 to go in the fourth quarter, but missed the extra point and Waterloo trailed 20-14.
Following a 40-yard pass from Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Laskowski to Mitchell Gladney, the ‘Dogs took the lead back on a Jennings TD run to go up 21-20 with just 5:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Waterloo’s defense forced Jerseyville to punt on its next possession, but on a third and 12 play at the Jerseyville 27, Laskowski’s pass was picked off and the Panthers had the ball at the Waterloo 45 with 1:43 to go.
Jerseyville drove to the Waterloo 5-yard line before kicking the game-winning field goal with 31 seconds remaining to win the game.
