A Columbia man who was critically injured after his car collided with a wrong-way driver last Saturday morning has died.

Brian Baker, 62, of Columbia, was turning left onto Route 3 southbound in his 2010 Toyota Prius from the intersection of South Main Street in Columbia shortly before 7:30 a.m. July 19 when a taxi cab driven by Adam L. Wagner, 26, of St. Charles, Mo. — driving southbound in the northbound lanes — crashed into the passenger side of Baker’s car.

Baker, who was a member of Hope Christian Church and served as a Republican precinct committeeman, was airlifted by ARCH Air Medical Services helicopter to Saint Louis University Hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash. Baker was on his way to an elders meeting at Hope when the crash occurred.

Wagner was arrested for aggravated DUI, aggravated reckless driving, failure to wear a seat belt and improper lane usage (wrong way driving). Additional charges are pending. He refused medical transport at the scene.

A life celebration for Baker will take place Sunday, Aug, 17 at Hope Christian Church. Among his surviving relatives is wife, JoAnn. Read more in the July 30 print edition.
