A Collinsville man escaped injury when his patriotic colored ultralight experimental aircraft went down into a tall field of corn in rural Monroe County around 4 p.m. on Friday, July 4.

The crash wasn’t reported until shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday, when the pilot returned to the crash scene to speak with the property owner at 9977 Levee Road in rural Columbia. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and Columbia Fire Department responded to the scene on Saturday, but it was quickly determined there was no emergency situation to tend to.

The Quicksilver ultralight plane crashed into the middle of the field off Levee Road. The downed aircraft was not easily visible from the roadway due to the high stalks of corn.

The pilot was identified as William Rohland, 70, of Collinsville.
