Softball postseason play under way

Class 3A teams Columbia and Waterloo still have a week of regular season left to play, but other local softball teams began postseason play this week.

In Class 1A, Valmeyer opened regional play Monday with a 19-3 win over Christ Our Savior in Marissa. The Pirates (4-16) played New Athens on Tuesday. Results were not known at press time. The championship game of the Marissa Regional will take place Saturday at 11 a.m.

Two local teams are playing  in separate Class 2A regionals. Gibault (14-14) will play Freeburg Wednesday in the Red Bud Regional for the right to advance to Saturday’s title game. The winner of this regional advances to the Johnston City Sectional.

Dupo (26-6) has had a terrific season, and as such is the top seed in the Hillsboro Regional. The young Tigers were to play Hillsboro on Tuesday. Results were not known at press time. Dupo is hoping to advance to the regional final game to be played Saturday morning. The winner of this regional advances to the Litchfield Sectional.

In Class 3A, Columbia and Waterloo will both play in the Columbia Regional next week. At 29-2, the Eagles rightfully earned the top seed and on May 27 will play the winner of Cahokia vs. Althoff.

Waterloo (20-8) has the second seed in the same regional, and on May 28 will play the winner of East St. Louis vs. Mascoutah.

The Eagles and ‘Dogs could meet in the regional final, which will be played May 31 at 11 a.m. for the right to advance to the Centralia Sectional.
