Vehicle crashes into Columbia business

Columbia police, fire and EMS responded to the report of a car that had driven through the front of Columbia Rehab Specialists at 236 Southwoods Center in Columbia. The call went out shortly before 1 p.m. Monday. The car involved was a white Chrysler 300 driven by Mariam Fischer, 72, of Columbia, who declined medical transport at the scene. Her car accelerated forward from a parking spot in front of the business.

Two women who were inside the business, Nellie Knapp, 89, of Columbia, and Fay Skaer, 54, of Smithton, were transported to area hospitals. Knapp was struck by debris from the crash. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Skaer, an employee of Columbia Rehab Specialists, was at a reception desk when she was pushed back from the force of the crash. She was transported to Memorial Hospital in Belleville.
