It has become a local tradition for some, to brave the freezing temperatures on New Years Day — a way to usher in the new year and to help raise money for a good cause. Here are a few scenes of some local Polar Bear fun that can be found in the Jan. 8 edition of the Republic-Times newspaper.

Polar Bear Plunge in Maeystown

The Maeystown Polar Bear Club sat in the frigid water of the Maeystown creek on New Year’s Day for its 12th annual “Polar Bear Plunge.” The club uses this annual event to raise funds for a school program called Operation Backpack, sponsored by St. John United Church of Christ of Maeystown. The program sends students in need home with a backpack of food on Fridays for weekend meals.
