Eldo Martin Horn Jr.

Eldo “Junior” Martin Horn Jr., 73, formerly of Waterloo, died Sept. 1, 2013, at Abilene Regional Medical Center, Abilene, Texas.

He was born May 28, 1940, in Waterloo, the third child and only son of Eldo Martin Horn Sr. and Ida Marion Horn (nee Foslar).

Mr. Horn graduated from Waterloo High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1965. After his honorable discharge, he married Mary Elizabeth Horn (nee Hooten) of Fults and opened his own bakery in Columbia. After the birth of their only child, Bradley, the couple moved to St. Charles, Mo., and he Eldo joined the Baked Goods Division of the Kroger Company, where he worked more than 20 years.

In retirement, Eldo enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. His many journeys took him not only to different parts of the United States, but also to Poland, Denmark, Germany, Turkey, the Bahamas and Chile. Always one to enjoy sampling the local food and drink, Eldo was particularly fond of a good bratwurst and an ice-cold pisco sour, preferably a double.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Abilene, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Bradley and Kierstin Horn of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Maya and Zara Horn, also of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four siblings, Doris Horn of Waterloo, Irene (Larry) Bruce of St. Charles, Mo., Janet (Norbert) Mudd of Waterloo, and Robert “Bob” Horn of Waterloo; as well as numerous in-laws, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo, at 1 p.m.

Immediately following the church service, a celebration of Eldo’s life will be held at Camp Wartburg.

Per his request, he was cremated.
