Fresh off a first place finish in the Metro Cup tourney, the Gibault Hawks soccer team defeated Saint Louis University High School on Tuesday night for the first time in school history. The 3-2 win improved Gibault’s season record to 5-0. Just days earlier, SLUH had defeated the second ranked team in the country.

Andrew Reinholz scored two goals and Mitch Meyer netted the other against SLUH, which had just defeated nationally ranked St. Xavier — who had 59-game undefeated streak before the loss.

Gibault continued its winning ways Wednesday night, avenging last season’s heartbreaking playoff loss to Alton-Marquette with a 1-0 win. Scoring the game’s only goal for the Hawks was Meyer.

But the Hawks had a letdown game Thursday, suffering their first loss of the season Thursday night at Oerter Park in Columbia. St. Pius scored a goal in the game’s final minute to pull off a 2-1 victory and ruin Gibault’s homecoming game.

Gibault’s Andrew Reinholz sits atop the area scoring leaderboard with 23 total points (11 goals, 1 assist).

Other soccer action…

Gibault isn’t the only local soccer team off to a hot start — the Columbia Eagles soared to another victory Tuesday night, defeating Carlyle 6-0. The Eagles then hosted Mascoutah on Thursday, notching yet another win.

The Eagles (4-0) won easily against the Indians, 8-1, keeping their season record perfect in the process. Andrew Dossett and Kyle Gudeman scored two goals each in the victory.

Dossett sits among the area scoring leaders with 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists), while his teammate Matthew Roderick isn’t far behind with 14 points (6 goals, 2 assists).

The Eagles play at Wesclin on Sept. 9.

In other local soccer action, Valmeyer received goals from Trent Larson and Hunter Brewer to slip past Valley Park on Thursday, 2-1.

Waterloo lost to Belleville East on Thursday, 3-0.
