The Republic-Times Athlete of the Week is Columbia High School girls basketball standout Sam Schmuke. The program’s all-time career steals leader, Schmuke was named MVP of the Candy Cane Classic after leading the Eagles to the tournament championship Saturday at Gibault. For the season, Schmuke leads Columbia in scoring at 14.7 points and 5.4 steals per game. She’s shooting 50 percent from three-point range.
