Roy L. Cooley | Obituary

Roy L. Cooley, 95, of Columbia, died Aug. 31, 2024, at his residence. He was born June 13, 1929, in Manila, Ark.

Roy was retired from the Illinois State Police. He was a member of Columbia American Legion post 581, the Retired Illinois State Police Association, he was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and he loved to golf.

Surviving are his loving wife of 40 years, Darlene M. Cooley (nee Peterson) whom he married on March 16, 1984, in Mt. Vernon. his son, Scott W. (Keyma) Bullock, his grandchildren, Dylan Bullock (Brandi Roberts), and Sydney (Jake) Leckliter, his great grandson, Owen Leckliter, his sister-in-law, Donna (Jerry) Bumpus, his great niece Tammy Call and her daughter Emily, and Debbie (Brad) Sanders and their family. along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Sr., and Pearl, nee Gibbs, Cooley, his brother, Ralph Cooley Jr., his mother-in-law, Lenora Bumpus and his brother-in-law, Donald Peterson.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 4 at Leesman Funeral Home in Columbia.

A funeral service will follow at the funeral home with Chuck Smith officiating.

Interment will be at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Columbia.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to: Columbia Police Department; Columbia Volunteer Fire Department; or Columbia EMS.
