William W. Vickers Sr. | Obituary

William Walter Vickers Sr., 99 years of Dupo, died Aug. 30, 2024 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. He was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Dupo.

William was honorably discharged from the United States Army in February of 1944, he graduated from Dupo High School in 1945. William was a 4th generation railroader. He retired as a clerk from the Alton & Southern Railway in East St. Louis, IL., with 42 years of service, and he previously had worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Dupo, IL. He also was elected as Secretary/Treasure of the Brotherhood of Railroad Clerks Union and he held life membership in BRAC/TCU/IAM Railroad Union. William was baptized at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Sugarloaf, he served as an election judge for Sugarloaf Township, in 1973 he was elected to the Dupo Village Board and served 18 years as Street Superintendent, he enjoyed his monthly activities with the Sugarloaf Senior Group, in 1988 he was awarded a brick in the Dupo Walk of Honor. He enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, working on cars, working jigsaw and word puzzles, St. Louis Cardinals baseball games and family gathering. He and his family have deep roots in Dupo, especially on State Street, and that is right where he belonged.

Surviving are his daughter, Nancy (Raymond) Posey of Dupo, IL, his grandchildren, Heather (Neal) Gipson of Post Falls, ID, Holly (Craig) Mueller of Imperial, MO., Joshua Vickers and Benjamin (Shannon) Vickers of Kearny, MO., his great grandchildren, David (Alycia) Otten of Columbia, IL., Jacob and Emily Mueller of Imperial, MO., Grace (Austin) Wiseman of Rathdrum, ID, Hannah and Katie Gipson of Post Falls, ID, Dominic and Mia Vickers, of Kearny, MO, his great great grandchildren, Mavis and Hudson Wiseman of Rathdrum, ID and Landon Otten of Columbia, IL. along with nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his Wife of 59 years, Wilma E. Vickers, his sons, William “Bill” Vickers , Jr., and Robert Vickers, his parents, Thomas Arthur and Ruth M., nee Hamilton, Vickers Sr., his siblings, Thomas Jr., John, Samuel, Franklin and Eleanora Vickers and Rose Marie (Allan) Bayha, and his great-granddaughter, Lindsey Otten.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sept. 3 at Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo.

A funeral services will follow at the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Laufer officiating.

A graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 4 at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Those wishing to attend are asked to gather on the Leesman Funeral Home parking lot at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be directed to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Sugarloaf.
