WHS softball keeps smiling

The Waterloo High School softball squad continues to impress this spring, increasing its winning streak to 11 games following another victory Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (13-1) took down Mascoutah by the score of 8-1. Maddie Gummershiemer drove in three runs and Aidan Dintelman pitched a complete game two-hitter.

Gummersheimer also drove in three runs in Monday’s 5-0 win over Triad. Mia Miller struck out 13 in Monday’s win.

On Saturday, the ‘Dogs won 8-1 over Collinsville. Dintelman struck out 10 in a complete game, and Waterloo got two hits each from Raelyn Melching and Mallory Thompson. 

On Friday, Waterloo won 4-0 over Belleville West and 22-0 over Cahokia. 

Miller had 13 strikeouts against Belleville West, with both Melching and Thompson collecting two hits each. Melching smacked a home run. 

Bella Rieken went 2-for-2 with seven RBIs and Taryn Kern went 4-for-4 in the win over Cahokia. 

Waterloo played Thursday against Gibault, winning 15-0. Samantha Juelfs went 3-for-3 to pace the offense.

Waterloo plays Friday at Red Bud and both Freeburg and Gillespie at Freeburg this Saturday. 

Melching leads the ‘Dogs in hitting this spring with a .613 batting average, four home runs, five doubles and 20 RBIs.

Miller is 6-1 in the pitching circle with a 0.00 ERA and 85 strikeouts in just over 41 innings.

Columbia (11-5) won 7-0 over Roxana as Emily Webb threw an 11-strikeout no-hitter and Jaylyn Brister went 3-for-3 – including her 100th career hit. 

The Eagles won 18-0 over New Athens on Monday. Sam Augustine went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Reese Jarrard went 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

On Friday, the Eagles lost 5-1 to Belleville West. Reagan Mathews went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI for Columbia. 

The Eagles hosted Freeburg on Thursday, falling 9-2, and play Friday at Granite City. 

Elle van Breusegen leads the Columbia offense with a .571 batting average and 21 runs, followed by Paige Froess at .458 with 15 RBIs. Both Mathews and Jarrard are hitting .417.

Valmeyer (4-3) picked up some recent wins as the Pirates try to steer the ship in the right direction. 

Valmeyer won 6-0 at Dupo on Tuesday, holding the Tigers to just two hits on the day. 

On Friday, Valmeyer won 13-0 at Steeleville. Brooke Miller and Payton Similey, both seniors, each went 4-for-5 in the win. 

Miller, who also struck out 14 in a complete game two-hitter, stole four bases and scored four runs.  Similey, the starting catcher, drove in three runs.

This past Thursday, the Pirates posted a 9-5 victory over New Athens. Rylee Nagel, another senior, went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs to pace the Valmeyer offense. 

Similey leads Valmeyer in hitting with a .524 batting average to go along with six stolen bases and seven RBIs.

Miller is hitting .435 with eight runs in addition to her 2.30 ERA in the pitching circle. 

Gibault (3-6) lost 20-5 at Red Bud on Monday despite both Libby Mesch and Ashley Murphy going 2-for-3. 

On April 1, the Hawks pulled out a dramatic 11-10 win at home over Wood River. Gibault trailed 10-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, then plated six runs to win. 

Murphy leads the Hawks this spring in hitting at .444, followed by Sophie Winkler at .409 with nine runs. 

Gibault plays Thursday at Waterloo before hosting Wesclin this coming Monday. 

Dupo (1-6) picked up its first victory of the season on Monday, 24-0 over Cahokia. Maddie Ehrhard went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Jaylee Long went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. 

This past Thursday, the Tigers lost 15-0 at Red Bud. That was preceded by a 16-1 loss at Marissa last Wednesday. 

Ehrhard, Maryann Imhoff and Addy Mitchell collected the team’s three hits against Marissa.

Dupo plays Thursday at Steeleville.

Lily McMannis leads the Tigers in hitting so far this spring at .500.
