One local high school girls soccer team remains unbeaten while another absorbed its first loss in recent action. 

Columbia (11-1-1) picked up three more wins – including a victory Tuesday night at rival Waterloo. Bulldogs were initially credited with a goal to go up 1-0 in the final second of the first half, only to see that goal come off the scoreboard. 

The Eagles took charge from there, scoring five goals in the second half. Maddie Mauch scored twice for Columbia. For photos from Tuesday’s match, click here.

Columbia dropped a hard-fought 4-3 match at Granite City on Thursday. The Eagles play Monday at Oakville. 

This past Thursday, the Eagles won 6-0 over Roxana. With two goals, Mauch became the program’s all-time career goals leader with 96 total tallies. Riley Mathews contributed a pair of goals and two assists. 

Last Tuesday, Columbia posted a 9-0 victory at Breese Central. Mauch and Mathews were at it again, each recording two goals and two assists. Sam Schmuke and Reese Woelfel also scored twice each for the Eagles, who also won 9-0 over Wesclin last Monday. Mauch had three goals and three assists, and Sarah Ross also recorded a hat trick in that win. 

On March 29, Columbia picked up a 1-0 victory over large school Winnetka New Trier. Ross netted the game’s only goal.  

Mauch leads the Eagles in scoring this spring with 23 goals and 15 assists, followed by Mathews at 12 goals and 14 assists and Ross at 13 goals and seven assists.

Columbia has not allowed a goal since a 2-2 tie with Father McGivney on March 25. The team has only surrendered four goals all spring while scoring 66.

Waterloo entered Tuesday’s tilt against Columbia with a 7-1-1 record. 

This past Thursday, the Bulldogs won 2-1 in penalty kicks over Mississippi Valley Conference foe Mascoutah. Trailing 1-0, Waterloo’s Liv Colson scored a second half equalizer. 

In PKs, the ‘Dogs got goals from Colson, Kate Pohl, Grace Pohl, Aubrey Heck and Chloe Wagenknecht. Waterloo goalie Larkin Nottmeier stopped Mascoutah’s third PK attempt.

Last Tuesday, Waterloo lost at longtime MVC nemesis Triad, 3-1. Olivia Gardner netted the only goal for the Bulldogs. 

On April 1, Waterloo won 5-1 over Freeburg, getting a hat trick and two assists from Colson.  

Waterloo plays Monday against Gibault at Oerter Park in Columbia, then hosts Highland this coming Tuesday. 

Colson, a senior, leads the ‘Dogs in scoring with 11 goals and four assists. Megan Young has eight goals and five assists. 

Gibault (3-9) lost 5-0 on Monday at Mehlville, 6-3 on Tuesday at Althoff and 4-0 on Wednesday at Mascoutah.

This past Thursday, the Hawks lost 4-1 to Mater Dei. 

Prior to those losses, Gibault lost 4-1 to Civic Memorial on April 1 and 3-2 to Belleville West on March 28.

Emily Richardson leads Gibault in scoring this season with 13 goals and four assists.
