The Waterloo High School boys tennis squad is off to a solid start this spring with an overall record of 7-2.

The Bulldogs won their flight at the Edwardsville Tournament over the weekend. They were able to beat Principia, 8-1, and followed that up with a gritty 5-4 victory over the Edwardsville Orange squad.

They completed the tournament with a 7-2 win over Cary Grove High School from the Chicago area.

“The team is playing well,” Waterloo head coach Brett Ivers said. “Some of our close matches came down to big performances up and down the lineup. All of the boys are working hard to play their best tennis. We have had a couple tough matches, and each time there has been adversity, the boys have responded in a positive manner.”

Patrick Nobbe is Waterloo’s top singles player and is 8-3 in singles and 7-0 in doubles. He teams with Caeden Wille for our Waterloo’s No. 2 doubles team.

Eli Schwehr is 4-3 at No. 2 singles and 4-6 at No. 1 doubles with Grant Eugea.

Eugea is 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Wille plays No. 4 singles and has a 4-6 record, with some of those matches being played higher in the lineup due to the tournament format.

Collin Groves is in his first year in Waterloo’s varsity lineup and has provided good depth, according to Ivers. He is 5-3 at No. 5 singles.

Brendan McClory plays No. 6 singles and has a record of 6-1. He and Groves team up to form Waterloo’s No. 3 doubles team, which is 6-4.
