All-Local Boys Hoops Team

Gavin Kessler

Featuring two all-state selections and other athletes who competed on successful squads this winter, the high school basketball scene remains impressive here locally.

Here’s a look at the Republic-Times All-Local Boys Hoops Team for the recently completed 2023-24 season.

FIRST TEAM

Sam Donald, Columbia. This 6-foot-8 junior all-stater averaged 21 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season while leading the Eagles to a 24-9 record. Donald shot 78 percent from the free throw line and was also a solid long-range shooter, making 39 percent of his three-point attempts. Donald has scored 1,411 career points at CHS and has a chance next season to eclipse the 2,000-point barrier.

Kanen Augustine, Gibault. A senior guard, Augustine averaged 14 points, 2.7 assists and more than two steals per game this season for the Hawks, who went 21-15 on the season and won a third straight regional championship.

Alex Stell, Waterloo. A 6-foot-10 junior, Stell is hard to miss on the court. He averaged 16 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for the Bulldogs, who will look for him to put up even bigger numbers next season.

Gavin Kesler, Gibault. A hard-working senior leader for the Hawks, Kesler averaged 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game on the season in addition to shooting 74 percent from the free throw line.

Aiden Crossin, Valmeyer. The third junior on this list, Crossin was the main man most nights for the Pirates this season. He averaged 16.4 points, four rebounds and nearly two steals per contest in addition to shooting nearly 39 percent from three-point range. The Pirates hope he can steer the ship to smoother waters next winter.

SECOND TEAM

Rodrigo Lopez Tercero, Waterloo. At 6-foot-8, this senior used the height to his advantage for a solid season. He averaged 12.2 points and nearly four rebounds per contest.

Landon Roy, Valmeyer. This lean and lanky junior put up great all-around numbers for the Pirates. He averaged 12.3 points, 4.3 assists and 2.8 steals per game this winter.

Brody Landgraf, Columbia. The first super sophomore on this list, Landgraf’s 6-foot-5, 215-pound frame gave the Eagles a powerful option down low. He averaged 11 points and six rebounds per game on the season.

Caleb Yochum, Waterloo. Another dependable senior for the Bulldogs, Yochum averaged 10.8 points per game and shot 83 percent from the free throw line.

Luke Blackwell, Valmeyer. Another tall sophomore, Blackwell is trending up in the sport after averaging 8.1 points, 10 rebounds and one block per game this season.
