The Waterloo High School girls basketball squad went on a late-season winning streak, with other local teams having mixed results of late. 

The Bulldogs (13-16) started their winning streak at home with a 55-28 win over rival Columbia on Jan. 23. The ‘Dogs went on a 24-10 run in the second quarter. Colson led the way with 13 points and seven steals. Mallory Thompson added nine points and 10 rebounds. 

On Jan. 26, Waterloo posted a 53-32 victory over Mascoutah. The Bulldogs trailed 25-17 at halftime before going on a 22-3 third quarter run. Thompson led the way with 23 points, followed by Colson with 13 points. 

The ‘Dogs picked up a 55-20 win at home over cross-town rival Gibault last Monday. Waterloo led 22-6 after one quarter and 32-10 at halftime. Colson, a senior, led Waterloo with 23 points. Thompson added 11 points.

On Thursday, Waterloo won 42-33 at Marissa behind 12 points and four steals from Colson. The Bulldogs defense forced Marissa into 20 turnovers.

On Friday, Waterloo won its fifth straight to the tune of 50-48 in overtime at Civic Memorial. Kristin Smith scored 22 points, with Colson contributing 11 points and eight rebounds. 

The streak came to an end Monday night at Freeburg as Waterloo lost 44-41. The ‘Dogs shot 6-for-29 from three-point range. Colson scored 13 points, and Smith added 11 points.

Waterloo plays Friday at Jerseyville. 

Colson is averaging nearly 11 points, six rebounds and 3.5 steals per contest this season.

Columbia (14-13) lost 60-27 to Breese Central on Thursday.

Last Monday, the Eagles dominated in a 44-28 victory over Freeburg. Sam Schmuke led the way for the Eagles with 21 points, six assists and six steals. Jay Brister added 12 points. 

On Jan. 25, Columbia lost 36-32 to Salem. The Eagles led after three quarters, only to see Salem go on a 21-12 run in fourth quarter. Schmuke poured in 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. 

In the Jan. 23 loss at Waterloo, Jordan Holten led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points.

Columbia hosted Triad on Tuesdayand hosts Roxana on Thursday and Red Bud on Saturday.

Holten is averaging nearly 13 points per game this season for Columbia. 

Schmuke is averaging 12.3 points and 4.35 steals per contest.

Valmeyer (11-7) was cooled off by a 40-37 loss Thursday at Steeleville, as a fourth quarter Pirates comeback fell just short. 

It was a poor shooting night for the Pirates, who were led by Avery Proffer with 10 points. Leading scorers Brooke and Kierstin Miller both fouled out.

On Jan. 26, the Pirates won 60-54 over Maryville Christian. Brooke Miller scored 18 points, pulled down 21 rebounds and blocked seven shots. Kierstin Miller added 21 points and 17 rebounds. 

On Jan. 25, Valmeyer ran into a tough Marissa squad, falling 50-23. Kierstin Miller grabbed 14 rebounds for the Pirates.

Valmeyer hosted Maryville Christian on Tuesday, hosts Red Bud on Wednesday, plays Thursday at Dupo and hosts New Athens on Saturday.

Brooke Miller is averaging 16.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game on the season. 

Kierstin Miller is averaging 11.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.

Gibault (8-18) picked up a 67-34 victory Monday over Dupo. Bri Baldridge and Myah Ticer, both seniors, each scored 17 points for the Hawks. Ticer made five three-pointers. Kamille Grohmann added 13 points.

On Thursday, the Hawks lost to Father McGivney.

On Jan. 25, Gibault won 49-16 over Bunker Hill. Baldridge scored 15 points, and Karmon Grohmann scored 12 points.

Baldridge is averaging 11 points per game this season to pace Gibault, which plays Wednesday at Sparta and Saturday at Steeleville. 

Dupo (5-18) posted a 42-31 win over New Athens on Thursday. Addison Mitchell and Keara Prater each scored 14 points for the Tigers, with Prater also grabbing 13 rebounds. 

Last Monday, Dupo won 56-51 over Maryville Christian. Mitchell scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded eight steal for the Tigers, who host Valmeyer this Thursday. 

Mitchell, a sophomore, is averaging 10 points and 3.2 steals per game this season to lead Dupo.
