Gibault avenges regional title, blanks Columbia 1-0

Saturday the Columbia High School girls soccer team was on its way to its sixth straight regional championship, but Gibault didn’t quite let them get there.

The Hawks, who lost to the Eagles in last year’s regional championship, avenged the title, taking the regional crown in a close, 1-0, game played at Columbia. This is Gibault soccer’s second regional title victory this season, with Matt Reeb taking both the boys and girls on to sectionals in the 2012-13 school year.

It was a close game all the way through, with no score at the end of the first half. But Gibault came out guns blazing, scoring just minutes into the second half on a Madi O’Neill goal, assisted by Abby Hasenstab, that went right through the fingers of Columbia goalie Claire Foster.

Both teams had a handful of shots on goal, with Columbia getting close twice in the second half and were shut down by Hawks goalie Kendra Davis.

Columbia ends its season 10-9, while the 12-5 Hawks advance to the Freeburg Sectional Semifinals to be played Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
