Local high school girls soccer squads are putting the finishing touches on the regular season before regional play begins next week. 

Columbia (13-6-2) won four of six recent matches, including a successful trip to Iowa.

On Wednesday, the Eagles lost to Freeburg for the first time ever, 3-2 in penalty kicks. Taylor Martin and Reese Woelfel netted the goals for Columbia. With the win, Freeburg also won the conference title for the first time.

Columbia won 13-0 over Salem on Tuesday. Maddie Mauch netted three goals and had an assist for the Eagles.  

Columbia traveled to Bettendorf, Iowa for a tournament last weekend, going 2-1. 

Last Friday, the Eagles lost 2-0 to a tough Chicago De La Salle squad. 

Last Saturday morning, Columbia posted a 3-1 win over Chicago Marist. Mauch had a goal and two assists, with Martin and Riley Mathews netting the other goals. 

Last Saturday afternoon, the Eagles posted a 3-1 victory over Elmhurst IC Catholic. Mauch and Woelfel each recorded a goal and an assist. Mathews also scored.

Last Tuesday, the Eagles won 3-1 over Belleville East with Mauch scoring a goal and contributing two assists. Sam Schmuke and Woelfel scored the other goals for Columbia. 

Mauch leads Columbia in scoring this season with 26 goals and 18 assists, followed by Martin with 13 goals and nine assists and Woelfel with 14 goals and six assists.

The Eagles open Class 1A Freeburg Regional play Tuesday against DuQuoin.

Waterloo (12-4-2) is also nearing the end of its regular season, with some key Mississippi Valley Conference clashes coming up. 

On Thursday, Waterloo posted a 10-0 win over Highland. Liv Colson finished with two goals and two assists for the victors.

On Tuesday, Waterloo lost 2-1 in penalty kicks to Mascoutah. Grace Pohl netted the goal for the ‘Dogs.

On Monday, the Bulldogs battled to a 0-0 tie against Belleville West. Lexi Stephens made seven saves to preserve the shutout for Waterloo. 

Last Tuesday, the Bulldogs blasted Jerseyville to the tune of 8-0. Megan Jung netted a hat trick and had two assists. Taylor Lance added a goal and assist for the victors.

Last Thursday, Waterloo’s longtime MVC nemesis avenged an earlier defeat this season. Triad edged the Bulldogs, 2-1. The match was scoreless at halftime. Norah Gum scored for Waterloo on an assist from Pohl. 

Jung leads the ‘Dogs in scoring this season with 10 goals and nine assists, followed by Pohl with five goals and 12 assists. 

The Bulldogs will compete in the Class 2A Richland County Regional with their first match taking place May 16 against Olney.

Gibault (8-10-1) opens Class 1A Murphysboro Regional play May 10 against Metropolis. It wrapped up the regular season with two wins.

On Wednesday, the Hawks won 3-2 over Father McGivney. Emily Richardson, Aubry Thomas and Sydney Wahle all scored for Gibault.

On Thursday, Gibault posted a 2-0 victory over Breese Central with Richardson and Thomas both scoring again.

On Monday, Gibault dropped a 4-0 match to Freeburg despite getting four shots from Richardson. 

The Hawks battled to a 1-1 tie against Catholic rival Althoff last Thursday. Richardson scored on an assist from Elena Oggero for Gibault.  

Richardson is the leading scorer for the Hawks this season with 14 goals and five assists.
