Hawks, Eagles start season on fire
The Gibault and Columbia high school girls softball teams are on fire. Both teams have opened up the season on a roll ,with each team only suffering one loss, as well as putting up big numbers on the scoreboard. In Gibault’s first 11 games, the team has outscored its opponents 106-39, while Columbia has beaten its first six opponents 89-24.
Monday, both teams added to the win column with Columbia (5-1) walking all over Metro East Lutheran on its way to a 20-0 short-game.
Senior Alexis Royer hit two home runs against the Knights. In all three of the Eagles; games this past week, a CHS player has hit at least one out of the park. Also putting up impressive stats over the past week are pitchers Brianna Weilbacher (23 strikeouts in two games on Friday and Saturday) and Kaitlin Grohman (12 K’s Monday night).

Gibault is on a streak in more ways than one. The team has played six games in the past six days, winning five in a row.
Monday, the Hawks (10-1) defeated Roxana, 10-6 and 12-4, in a double-header match-up.
The Eagles are not the only ones hitting bombs. The Hawks have hit seven out of the park in its last six games, with senior Kelly Kapp homering in the second game Monday night against the Shells. Paige Wriston and Morgan Weber racked up two HRs each over the past week as well.
Gibault is also doing well off the mound, with its staff of Noelle Davis (4-0), Megan Wagner (3-0) and Morgan Weber (3-1) only charting one loss on the season thus far.
Gibault will travel to Belleville East (5-1) Wednesday.
In other softball news…
The Waterloo Bulldogs won their first game of the season Monday at home against Freeburg, 9-1.
Waterloo (1-5) has been missing two upperclassmen due to disciplinary action who are expected to return next week if games are not rained out, and has had to rely on some of its younger players to step in. For example, Monday, freshman Mallory Meyer pitched all seven innings for the ‘Dogs, throwing five “K’s.”
The Bulldogs will look for their first win streak of the season at Marissa on Wednesday.
