Bulldogs win tourney title

The Waterloo High School girls basketball team faced a familiar foe in the title game of this year’s Waterloo-Red Bud Holiday Tournament at WHS.

The Bulldogs previously bested Althoff to win the Columbia Tip-Off Classic at the start of the season. 

On Friday night, Waterloo faced Althoff with another title on the line. The Bulldogs topped the Crusaders again, 49-46, to improve to 11-5 on the season. 

Norah Gum led Waterloo with 16 points in the win.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs posted a 52-34 victory over a tough Carlyle squad. The game was tied 19-19 at halftime. Waterloo closed out the contest with a 24-11 run in the fourth quarter to finally pull away.

Gum again led the way with 18 points and Sam Lindhorst added 13 points for the ‘Dogs.

Last Wednesday, Waterloo toppled cross-town rival Gibault to the tune of 55-27. The Bulldogs went up 19-7 after the first quarter. Waterloo grabbed 46 total rebounds as a team.

Gum again led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Lindhorst added 14 points and seven assists.

Last Tuesday, Waterloo opened its tourney run with a 60-25 win over Marissa. The ‘Dogs went up 33-9 at halftime.

Lindhorst had 15 points and four steals. Gum added 12 points and Liv Colson contributed 11 points and four steals. 

Waterloo battles Mississippi Valley Conference rival Highland in the Highland Optimist Shootout this Saturday morning. 

Columbia (12-6) battled Carlyle in the third place game of the Waterloo-Red Bud Holiday Tournament, losing 62-54.

Jordan Holten scored 16 points to lead the Eagles. 

On Thursday, Columbia dropped a 57-35 contest to Althoff at the tourney. The Eagles trailed 14-6 after one quarter and 31-15 at halftime. 

Sam Schmuke scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and added four steals to lead the Eagles, who committed 27 turnovers in the loss.

Last Wednesday, Columbia won 77-47 over Red Bud in the tourney. The Eagles led 22-6 after the first quarter.

Karsen Jany led the way with 26 points, eight rebounds and four steals for Columbia. Holten added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Schmuke and Ava Langhans added 10 points each.

Last Tuesday, Columbia opened its tourney schedule with a 63-35 win over Roxana. Holten scored 14 points and both Jany and Langhans added 13 points. 

The Eagles host Freeburg this Thursday before playing at Centralia on Monday night. 

Gibault (12-4) closed out tourney play with a win against Roxana on Friday, 33-29. 

On Thursday, the Hawks won 41-30 over Marissa. Gibault led 11-3 after the first quarter.

Kailynne Small was the star for the Hawks in the tourney. 

Dupo (7-6) played in a different tourney over the Christmas holiday, dropping two games at Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School in Centralia. 

The Tigers lost last Tuesday to Johnston City, 55-23, and lost last Wednesday to Anna-Jonesboro, 42-24.

Dupo plays in the Chester tourney this week.

Valmeyer (3-8) is also playing in the Chester tournament this week.

On Thursday, the Pirates host Lebanon.
